“We refuse to let West Basin move forward with a project knowing that ratepayers, our climate and marine environment will pay the price,” states Bruce Reznik, Los Angeles Waterkeeper’s Executive Director. #desal ⁦@SmarterWaterLA⁩ https://www.smdp.com/los-angeles-waterkeeper-sues-to-stop-south-bay-desal/184189

We warned West Basin Water District that we would use every legal tool available to stop them from building an ocean #desal plant in LA's South Bay. Yesterday, we sued.

UCLA’s ⁦@gregspierce⁩ hoped that West Basin would take seriously California’s Human Right to Water law & ensure #desal doesn’t “make its water unaffordable for the region’s working class residents.”

But they did not. Stay tuned. https://www.dailybreeze.com/2019/11/17/ratepayers-deserve-more-information-on-desalination-costs-greg-pierce/

We’re so glad LA County is investing $300 million/year to reuse #LArain! (via @StormwaterLA)

We’re infuriated that West Basin certified their astonishingly inadequate EIR on Monday & plan to spend half a billion taxpayer dollars on a wasteful #desal plant.

Unless we stop them.

We are beyond disappointed that the @WestBasin Board voted 4-1 to move ahead with the open ocean desalination project in the Santa Monica Bay, despite strong opposition from local environmental, environmental justice, climate and tribal NGOs, public agencies, and cities.

"The Human Right to Water has often been given lip service in such investment decisions, but only recently has it been brought to the fore."

The @WestBasin public meeting is about to begin. We are here in opposition of the $480 million dollar open ocean desal plant proposed for the Santa Monica Bay.

Seawater desal is…

“unlikely to be a major part of California’s water supply portfolio due to its high cost of operation, the availability of other sources of water (such as recycled wastewater), its high energy use and the resulting high levels of greenhouse gas emissions, and siting difficulties given the fragility and importance of California’s coastal ecosystems.”  Water in the West, Stanford University, 2016.
